Parts of our planet were at one time completely covered by deciduous hardwood forests.  What remains now are pockets growing on land generally unsuited for farming.  Our seedlings are a product of millions of years of natural selection.  The native specie has stood the test of time, developing a natural resistance to insects and disease while genetically adapting to the soils and climate in our region.

Each seed was carefully collected by hand and then individually grown right here in Loveland, Ohio.  We hope that you and the generations to follow will enjoy these trees, with their ancient bloodlines, as much as we have in growing them.

F.A.Q.’S

What do we sell?
We specialize in growing containerized, cold hardy, woody trees and shrubs that are native to the United States mid-west.  We also grow many other interesting plants that are native to other parts of our planet but that are adaptable to our Midwest weather.  Lastly, we grow named cultivars of native plants that were selected for their outstanding features and given a legal cultivar name, those plants are clones of the original plant.

Who are we?
Earthscapes, Inc. is a wholesale nursery located in Loveland, Ohio, an eastern suburb of Cincinnati.  The company, established by Peter J. White in 1971, specializes in the wholesale production of containerized seedlings, trees and perennials

What size are the trees we sell, what do they look like?
For smaller orders that will be shipped United Parcel Service we sell a one gallon container.  (United Parcel Service has very stringent height and weight limitations.)  For larger orders of 50 to 5000 plants which are shipped to commercial locations and go by Common Carrier semis we sell all the different sizes.

Please view the images of our products.  They vary in size from a 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” x 5” deep ‘tree pot’ to a 7 gallon container.  Small quantities shipped UPS are only sold in one gallon (two year old plants), with the exception of the 'Spring Grove' Dogwood which is sold only in 3 gallon containers at this time.  Orders of 50 or more one gallon or larger containers are palletized and shipped by Common Carrier (Business to Business Only, they do not make deliveries to a residence), but arrangements could be made for delivery to your church parking lot or another commercial site.  For local orders we have our own Commercial Box Truck or you may pick them up.

Different species of trees can vary greatly in height but we are trying to give our customers as much for their money as possible.  Most shade trees (with some exceptions) grown in plugs or Tree Pots will be 12” to 30” tall and generally are one year seedlings.  Most of the one gallon trees are two year seedlings and will vary in size between 24” to 60” tall. (Note that some species are small by nature and heights will vary greatly depending on the variety chosen. For example: Aesculus pavia Dwarf Red Buckeye are only 6” tall at one year up to 15” tall in two years in comparison to Platanus occidentalis American Sycamore being 36” tall at one year and 8’ tall at two years.)  Many of the one gallon trees above 5’ are reserved for commercial nurseries who require taller plants and are shipped on pallets by Common Carrier.

Who do we sell to?
Primarily to professionals and knowledgeable plant enthusiasts who know plants and their Latin names.  This includes individuals, commercial nurseries, garden centers, municipalities, arboretums, collection garden groups, cemeteries, nature preserves, conservation, wetland and stream bank restorations, school districts for Arbor Day, farmers and anyone interested in planting native trees.  Our customers are located from Colorado to Maine and Minnesota to Georgia.  We have even shipped trees as far as the Orient. (Our largest customers are commercial nurseries and reforestation contractors who buy our tallest plants in quantities of hundreds and thousands but our typical customer is one who buys five to ten native species to add to their suburban lot.  We contract grow for quantities of 200 or more of almost any variety.  Let us know if you are interested!) .

What is so special about our trees?
The simple answer is genes and the roots.  Our goal is to provide a genetically superior plant with a root system that will allow the plant to survive transplant shock at a reasonable cost.  This starts with the collection of the seed.  Before our seeds are collected, the parent tree is carefully observed for several years, monitoring growth rate, disease and insect susceptibility, flower color, fall color, all of which must be exceptional.  We avoid accepting seeds from friends, collecting from parks (trees have been planted by humans), or buying seeds on the open market.  Most of the seed that we use is personally collected by Peter White and carefully germinated by Neil Zureick and our propagation department.

The Roots: these trees are not bare root seedlings.  Bare root seedlings can be purchased very inexpensively.  Most of us who have attempted to grow bare root seedlings know that the results are usually less than desirable.  Most native trees have what is known as a taproot.  Generally, when a large portion of a taproot is cut, as in transplanting, the tree dies.  The key is to try to develop a multi-stemmed root system at a young age and avoid as much shock in transplanting as possible.  We have developed a production system that singes the taproot when it reaches the edge of the container and forces the root system at a young age to produce many fibrous roots and allows us to grow the plant in a container without restricting the roots.  This allows the tree to absorb more water and nutrients producing a healthier, stronger, faster growing plant that is easily transplantable with little disturbance to the roots.  We produce a fully established containerized tree.  Containerized trees are not nearly as fragile or as limiting to work with as bare root trees, which can only be handled when they are dormant. Each plant is inoculated with the proper mycorrhizae for that specie while in the seedling stage.

When to plant our trees and shrubs.
Essentially any time the ground is not frozen solid.  Our plants are in containers, not bare root.  This allows us to ship and you to plant almost any time, but there are practical considerations to be made, mostly to do with the weather such as heavy snow or summer drought.  At our nursery, we prefer to plant in the fall, early enough to establish roots to prevent frost heaving.  If you have a preference for a shipping date please note it on your order and we will do our best to accommodate you.  Planting instructions will be in the box  your plants are shipped in.

Is there a minimum order & how much is Shipping & Handling?
No, you may order any quantity. We ship in three different box sizes. One box will hold either one or two, one gallon plants, another box holds up to four plants, and a third box we can only ship one three gallon pot. No matter which box we use, the shipping & handling charge is $30.00 per box. (For example, if you order 5 - one gallon container trees, we ship in 2 boxes, 1 box of four plants and one vbox of 1 plant, for a total of $60.00 for shipping & handling charges.)
These are expenses we can not control and since we aren’t the largest mail order company in the world we can’t negotiate the prices in half – MAYBE SOMEDAY.  Remember we are wholesalers, not retailers who add shipping and handling costs into their product prices.  In our case, many folks don’t mind driving to our nursery to pick up their order, so they shouldn’t have to pay any shipping and handling and they don't.   We have struggled mightily with the issue of whether to sell one or two trees or shrubs and there are two factors that we can’t get around:  It costs almost as much to ship one or two as it does for four and we are wholesalers growers that normally sell by truck loads.  It is our opinion that your best value is to purchase in multiples of 4 containers.

If we want to pick up our order where are you and how do we get there? Our Hours?

Warranty Info, Please Read!
We are a wholesale nursery charging wholesale prices, and as such there are assumptions made on our part.  As stated under Terms and Conditions - Guarantee and Claims, no warranty is expressed or implied.  Essentially, we assume as wholesalers that we are dealing with customers who are knowledgeable about the product they are ordering.  We assume you know how and when to plant trees and shrubs and that they will die if not properly watered and cared for.  We also assume that you are knowledgeable enough about plant hardiness so as not to order plants that won’t survive where you plant them.
